Why it matters
Electrical faults are not always obvious, and some can be dangerous. If you notice any of the signs below, stop using the affected item where safe to do so and arrange for it to be checked. Electrical investigation and repair should be carried out by a competent, qualified electrician.
Signs to look out for
Any of the following suggests the installation should be inspected:
- Circuits or the main switch tripping repeatedly
- Sockets or switches that feel warm, are discoloured or show scorch marks
- A burning smell with no obvious source
- Flickering or dimming lights not caused by a faulty bulb
- Buzzing or crackling from sockets, switches or the consumer unit
- Damaged, cracked or loose accessories
- Mild shocks or tingling when touching appliances or switches
Older installations
Older properties may have installations that don't meet current expectations — for example, outdated consumer units or too few sockets, which leads to overuse of extension leads. A periodic inspection can establish the condition of the installation and any work that's recommended.
Landlords and commercial properties
Landlords and businesses have legal responsibilities for electrical safety in the properties they let or operate. Requirements vary by property type and use, so check the obligations that apply to you and keep records of inspections and work carried out.
What to do next
If you've noticed any of these signs, get in touch and describe what's happening. We'll arrange for the issue to be investigated and explain the options for putting it right.
