Be clear about what you need
Begin with the practical: is a bath essential, or would a larger shower be more useful? Does the room need to suit young children, older relatives or guests? Answering these questions first makes design choices much easier.
Understand what limits the layout
The position of the soil pipe usually determines where the toilet can go, and the route for waste water affects where showers and basins can sit. Walk-in showers depend on the floor construction and the fall needed for drainage. An assessment of the room will confirm what's practical.
Don't overlook ventilation
Bathrooms produce a lot of moisture. Effective extraction helps prevent condensation, mould and damage to decoration. If your current bathroom suffers from condensation, raise it at the planning stage so ventilation can be improved as part of the work.
Preparation is what makes it last
The parts of a bathroom you never see — wall preparation, waterproofing around wet areas, secure fixings and properly sealed joints — determine how well it performs over time. Ask how wet areas will be prepared before tiling.
Choose finishes for daily use
Consider how easy surfaces are to clean, how tiles and grout will wear, and whether floors will be slippery when wet. Practical choices often look better for longer.
- Tile size and grout colour
- Floor finish and slip resistance
- Storage for everyday items
- Lighting suitable for bathroom zones
Coordinate the trades
A bathroom usually needs plumbing, electrical work, plastering or boarding, tiling and decoration. Having one team coordinate these trades keeps the project moving and gives you a single point of contact.
